FM hails Pakistan reelection at UNHRC important diplomatic achievement.
In a statement on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi commented on the Tuesday vote.
FM hails Pakistan reelection at UNHRC
He termed Pakistan’s re-election to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) as an important diplomatic achievement.
He noted every region supported Pakistan in its election to the human rights council.
Furthermore, Qureshi said influential and important countries also backed Pakistan.
He said this vote also shows Pakistan’s performance in the human rights council over the last three years.
The Foreign Minister said the world today is recognizing Pakistan’s role.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi said human rights violations has increased in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Hence, he noted becoming part of the human rights council at this critical time is a big achievement.
The United Nations’ top human rights body witnessed reelection of Pakistan for a period of three years.
Duration of new term will begin from January 1, 2021.
Notably, the country got a huge 169 votes in the Asia-Pacific group.
193-member UN General Assembly held elections for 15 new members to the 47-member Human Rights Council, based in Geneva.
China, Russia and Cuba also won seats on the U.N.’s premiere human rights body Tuesday despite opposition from activist groups over their abysmal human rights records.
However, Saudi Arabia lost, while Russia and Cuba were running unopposed.
