People of Iran have begun voting today in the parliamentary elections.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 84, cast his vote in Tehran.

About 15,000 candidates are vying for a seat in the Iran’s 290-member parliament, which was formally known as the Islamic Consultative Assembly. Over 60 million Iranians are exercising their right to vote in the elections. Also, there is a competition among 144 candidates for 88 seats of Majlis Rahbari. It should be noted that the members of Majlis Rahbari will be elected for 8 years.

The term of the parliament is four years and five seats are reserved for country’s religious minorities.

The parliament, under the law, has oversight over the executive branch, votes on treaties and handles other issues. In Iran, absolute power in practice rests with its supreme leader.

Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has severely criticized Western countries for the Gaza massacre.

In a message on social media platform X, he said that Western democracy and liberalism are nothing but hypocrisy. The Western beast is reacting worse than a wolf to Israel’s brutality, which can only be strongly condemned.

On the other hand, in a speech at ceremony, Ayatollah Khamenei said that the West, the so-called leader of human rights, has turned a blind eye to the deaths of Palestinians.

He further said that the US has brazenly vetoed the resolution to stop the bombing in Gaza. Western leaders are benevolent from above but are bloodthirsty wolves from within.

It should be noted that the West remains silent on the death of thousands of innocent Palestinians in the brutal attacks of the Israeli army in Gaza.
